Re: Brand New Corals

We need some background information. What lighting do you have, what size is your tank, does it have live rock and live sand, and if so, how much of it is there? Is there any other livestock?

Anywho, what I can tell you is that zoanthids rely on their zooxanthelle(spelling?) for food and don't really need any extra feeding, though it can speed up their growth. The leather would appreciate some phytoplankton, but it is not necessary, assuming you have a reef tank. The PH should be 8.0-8.3. As for flow, the leather would like medium indirect flow(such as a current bouncing off the glass/acrylic), and the zoanthids like just a little bit of flow. The leather needs lots of light, and the zoanthids will be fine where ever, though more vibrant colors have been observed in specimens exposed to more light. Sailfin tangs do best in tanks with lots of live rock with algae to feed on. They get quite large(up to 10 inchesish), and do not tolerate others of their kind, unless they are in a school(4-5 or more). They also need lots of swimming space, so you will need a 100+ tank to keep them happy at full size. As young, they can be kept in tanks down to about 60 gallons, but they will still need lots of swimming room, probably at least 2 1/2-3 feet across.

EDIT: I am not sure how the double post occurred. Sorry!

Re: Brand New Corals

Sailfins are gorgeous wonderful fish but they get BIG. The information I have read reports them up to 16 inches. I have one in my 125 and he is quickly outgrowing the tank.

A reef tank is like a racecar. The faster you go the harder you crash.

I thought they usually maxed out at 12-14 inches in captivity. The biggest one I've ever seen was a least 10. It was massive...

I would agree with usually 12-14 but they can get up to 16. Either way it is a very large fish and they need a lot of swimming room.

Yeah. Honestly I recommend getting a purple, yellow, convict, or some kind of mimic tang instead of a Sailfin. They just get so big.
