Nano Coral?

Hey guys. Im new to RS and wanted to ask my first question. I couldnt find a thread to answer the question. I have a 25g nano and want to start a coral reef tank. I cycled my tank with live rock and do a weekly water change to keep my parameters good. Im not sure about what type of corals. SPS? LPS? Soft corals? Any suggestions? heres a pic of my tank. Any and all replies are greatly appreciated.

Re: Nano Coral?

You have a number of options. Since the tank is just through it's initial cycle, I wouldn't rush into a lot of corals. Also, since you have a smaller tank, you want everything you add to be a real gem.

I would consider some mushrooms, and soft corals to start with. Leather corals are usually easy to keep, and would be a good choice. So would some star polyps. Colt corals and xenia would be a little harder, but doable.

Later on you could add some LPS corals.

I think I'd avoid the LPS corals since those require much better lighting and water conditions, which is tough to do in a nano.

In the second sentence, I'm sure Dave meant to say SPS.... The softies would be a good start.. What kind of lighting is on the tank?

Re: Nano Coral?

I have a "nano" frogspawn and my husband is really jealous. It's beautiful.

I have few different zoos in my 37 and they're doing REALLY well... they're going to take over in a while.

Re: Nano Coral?

The SPS corals need very stable water parameters, and allot of light. In a 25 that is just through its first cycle I would steer clear of these. I would go with Shrooms, and some softies. Just be sure to research what you add first, some soft corals need just as much light as SPS. Zoanthids are very easy to keep and dont need as much light. I would wait on the LPS as well. They can be kinda touchy when it comes to water quality.
Good-Luck and welcome to RS---Michael

Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: Nano Coral?

Hey everyone. thanks for the reply. My lighting I have is the stock hood which is 72watts. Im planning on buying the Sunpod 150watt MH. Would that be enough light for a 25g coral tank? I have a chiller that keeps my water at 77-79degrees. My salinity is 1.027. ph 8.0 nitrates 0. I used RO water to top off. Pretty good parameters I think, unless you guys think I should change. How does this look?

Re: Nano Coral?

Welcome to RS
I kept sucessfully in my Nano Cube with 72w of lighing
Xenia, Green Star Polyps, Mushrooms, Yellow polyps& Leather Corals. I did have a frogspawn and a Galxia also but they quickly outgrew the tank and started stinging other corals. When I upgraded my lights to 144w of PC the Green star polyps took over the tank.

Re: Nano Coral?

Sorry I am so late but Welcome to RS!
Looks like you have a nice litttle nano going there.
If you plan to keep the anemones then you really do need to upgrade the lights. Anemones require high lighting and very stable water paramaters. Be sure to keep up on your water changes and testing and get the stronger light to give these guys a chance.
