coralline algae

Here is my 24 gallon aquapod after 4 months.... Everything is growing and doing very well. Water parameters are all in check, but why am I not getting coralline algae growth?

Re: coralline algae

It will come in time. Keeping your Alk at 7-11dKh, your Ca 380-450 and your pH 8.1-8.4 will go a long way to inducing its growth. You may want to purchase a piece of LR from your LFS that has a lot of coraline algae on it and put it in your tank. You can also scrape the coraline with a fork or similar hard object to release and distribute the spores. Be careful what you ask for however!

Want mine? It's a love/hate thing. It's pretty but it's a pain to clean. It's growing in my skimmer where I can't clean.

Re: coralline algae

Even though many times you'll hear/read where we mention as "coralline" algae as an indicator to over-all tank stability you do have to remember it IS an algae and like any other can quickly become less than desirable. It's fairly easy to get it started once everything else is ideal but note... once it's started it owns you That stuff grows on everything and is a BEAR to remove if you aren't very diligent about almost daily scraping.

Be patient and one day you'll be looking at your tank and go, "Uh oh.. my tank is covered with that #@$%#$ coralline alage!"

Re: coralline algae

in addition to Ca and alk your magnesium has to be high also, like near 1300. When I dose Mg I notice a surge in corraline growth. It will come don't sweat it. Also what is your light? I have two systems, both sharing one sump, one T5 and one MH. The T5 showed growth first but the MH has since caught up and surpassed.

Re: coralline algae

I am getting a LOT of coraline growth on my 4 month old AquaPod 24 and I'm not doing ANYTHING, i.e., I'm not adding any additives. However, I was using ONLY Nutri Seawater (live seawater) for water changes, perhaps this has something to do with it.

Hello,

Like your tank! What's that round thing in the back on the right (i.e., where the filter intake slots are)?

Thanks
John

Re: coralline algae

that's a Hydor flow directer. It slips over the output of a power head or bulk head and rotates in a circle to send flow in a seemingly random pattern.

I have one but quit using it about a month ago because one week it would lock up... I would take it apart and clean it. Next week it wouldn't stay on the output shaft so I would glue it. Two weeks later it locks up again and eventually it was just the water pattern that was going in circles
