Brain Wart Growth

OK, I posted pics yesterday of the wart looking thing on my brain, today it is bigger and again looks like a clear bubble. I have better pictures of it tonight and maybe you can see the wart growth thing better on these. Now any other guesses or suggestions as to what it might be...no Steve it isn't a loogy! lol

Re: Brain Wart Growth

Am assuming you are talking about the dark thing sticking up towards the center of the coral, if so, it appears to me to be an invasive invert, possibly either a Vermetid snail or a Spionid worm. To be rid of such critters, you can take a tweezers and pinch it off as close to the base of the critter as you can without pinching coral tissue, once dead, the coral should easily regain over that lost ground.

Re: Brain Wart Growth

Thats the thing I am talking about. When I had seen it before I took the coral out and messed with that little bubble thinking it was bubble algae. Now the little thing is back and seems to get bigger right before my very eyes. Thanks for the suggestion. Anyone else have any other input since I have better pictures of this thing?

Re: Brain Wart Growth

Weird, looks like an air bubble attached to the top of it. I haven't had to deal with Vermetid snail or a Spionid worm so I would follow Charles' advice. I do agree that the coral should not have any issues growing over it once it is dead.
It almost looks like dinoflagellate that had attached to an outgrowth of the skeleton, but in that case the bubble would just come off once you touched it.

Re: Brain Wart Growth

I have little expereince with this (either that coral or bubble algae) but that does look like what I have seen at a Fish Store and it was bubble algae per the store owner. He said it was a fairly fast growing thing and something about when he popped the bubbles it released more spores into the tank. I think there are some other threads here on RS about bubble algae so you may try a search here for it.

Good luck and sorry for the "iffy" response from Me!!

Re: Brain Wart Growth

Was that spot an open wound or bare skeletal area at anytime? If so, it could also be cyano growing on it and standing up like that as it produces oxygen bubbles. You could try a very soft toothbrush, and VERY, VERY gently swipe that spot and see it it lifts off, very gentle swipes will not hurt the corals tissue as I have done this numerous times with damaged corals before. If it turns out to be a hard or semi-flexable protrusion, then its tweezers time...lol

Re: Brain Wart Growth

No that coral has never been damaged or has his skeleton ever shown, at least to the best of my knowledge and I have had this coral for about a year, maybe a little more. I have not done anything to it yet and it has grown some more. The bubble no longer looks like a bubble, but it almost looks like some type of coral or something with spores. I don't think it is bubble algae. I thought that was what it was to begin with and had taken it from the tank to pop it in a closed container that would not contaminate my tank. Anyway, I think I am going to wait another day or two just to see what it does. Here is another picture of the brain as it was today.

I think it is a good idea to just watch it right now.

Re: Brain Wart Growth

IT is growing, today there is another bubble and it appears that when the clear bubble appears the next day it is a solid form where the bubble was. It is growing up and a little to the side. Maybe I should put a sign out there next to it, caution, construction zone....I don't know but I am going to continue to just watch it and see what happens.

Re: Brain Wart Growth

The doctor tried to squeeze the wart.
He tried to twist and turn it.
He tried to scrape and shave the wart.
He tried to boil and burn it.

He poked it with a pair of tongs.
He pulled it with his tweezers.
He held it under heat lamps,
and he crammed it into freezers.

Regrettably these treatments
were of very little use.
He looked at it and sputtered,
"Ach! I cannot get it loose!"

How could I resist. Steve
