| Totally stoked dude ![]() | Re: Care of a hydnophora? One thing with this hobby is that you really need to take everything you hear or read with a grain of salt. Double check and recheck "facts" to make sure they are true. That was the reason I asked. I'm by no means an expert on corals, but having had the opportunity to take a semester on coral reef biology with a world class expert in the the field that my university was lucky enough to land, I am pretty familiar with stony coral structure and physiology. I just wasn't aware of any info that showed nematocysts being excreted by stony corals into slime. that got released into the water column and wanted to check on what sources said that. You are correct though that care does need to be taken when mixing aggressive and less aggressive species. I also take caution when mixing leathers with stony corals since some of the chemicals released by leathers can inhibit the growth process of acropora corals.

| Sea Pen | Re: Care of a hydnophora? Usualy I am pretty good about not believing anything untill I get a reliable (someone with a PHD or at least working on one) source of such info. I think I just confused myself with anemones and gave corals the same attributes. Chuck

AFA as getting advice from someone with a masters or PhD, sometimes that means nothing. The two professors of coral reef biology where I got my degree couldn't keep a coral alive in an aquarium if there life depended on it . But they could tell me everything about the physiology of a coral and the ecology on coral reefs. But even what they say should be taken with a grain of salt until they can back it up with evidence. Same for everyone else.
