Missing BTA

Wheres my bubble tip anemone? He was alive and well yesterday and now he is nowhere to be found.

When these things die do they skrink so much that I cant see it? Or maybe it dug himself deep into the live rock looking for a new hangout?

I had one do the same thing the other day. Except mine was injured right before Christmas. So when it disappeared, I didn't have a warm fuzzy feeling.

But while tearing apart the tank to get the butterfly out, I found it alive and well- it had just gone inside the rockwork where I couldn't see it.

I just looked under my powerhead - sometimes stuff gets clumped in there....I think I see a small bit of red....is it possible the BTA got itself killed in the powerhead?

If this is what happened then I think Im about to throw this tank out the window.

Im really bummed.....and I think it was because of the rocks always tumbling down and I had to fix the aquascaping.....the BTA probably was just looking for a safe spot.

It's very possible that's what happened and it happens pretty often. I think you can use zip ties or rubber bands to secure the sponge on the powerhead. When you do, it will cut down the flow and you'll have to clean the sponges of detritus regularly.

If that's what happened, I'm really sorry to hear it... but don't throw the tank, consider it another lesson learned and move on. But keep an eye on your water quality, dead anemones can really pollute the living daylights out of a tank.

Sorry to hear that AJ. Travis is 100% right, keep an eye out on your water! We had one die in our tank a year ago and it was a couple months with many many water changes before we could keep any type of inverts.

well if it IS in the powerhead, then he already got puree'd and was fish food....I only see a LITTLE somehting in the powerhead. oh well.

he was all settled in a spot then I had to fix the rocks which prompted him to move. Im disgusted.

This happened to me also. I was lucky and caught it in time so i saved the rbta. i'm sorry for your loss there not cheap. Everyone here is right though, you need to run a wet skimmer now to pull all the dead flesh and bio parts out now.(asuming your running one) Keep a good eye on the water quality and look in the filter chambers for any left over pieces of it. If you run the skimmer wet and keep cleaning it you should be back to safe water quality for a new one in no time. Don't give up! This is part of owning a microcosm. Your gonna have losses now and in the future. Best to take it as a lesson learned and push forward. good luck!

This just happened to me. I guess the type that i bought was suppossed to be able to get his "foot" onto the glass on the bottom of the tank, which he couldn't do because of the deep sandbed, and just continued to float from spot to spot until one day.... he was ground up in the powerhead. It was a nasty, disgusting mess to clean up.

Hold on now... Careful reading of your posts do not convince me all is lost. We have had our RBTAs hide for days and days and days without a sighting, only to reappear one day happy and beautiful. When I first introduced one I was freaked that it was so delicate and fragile, only to discover over time - through numerous Xtreame-sport adventures that they are pretty darn hardy. I've become accustomed to them (we now have three via splits) shrinking, flirting with the powerhead, hiding, and looking amazingly beautiful.

I think if your BTA was chewed up and spit out of your powerhead you would have significant evidence of this tragedy. You are not reporting that.

Hang in there. (But also do as suggested above in case my Polly Anna perspective proves to be just that.) Do you have clowns? Sometimes you get a clue to where the BTA is by watching the behavior of your clowns.

We fall down -- we get up. There is so much to learn in this hobby. While it can be an expensive learning process, things settle out before too long. Keep your tank log filled with the details of your travails and keep moving. There is a lush and stable tank in your future!

True jimeluiz, it just might have been a piece of bta she found and the rest went into hiding to recover. Iv'e had my rbta's shrink up and and hide in the past and then Poof! there it was. if it resurfices AJ and is easy to capture you can plant it by putting a shell over it or a glass until it grabs hold of the rock. Woodstock told me that way back and it's worked for me.

Hey thanks for the encouragement.

No there is no "mess" in my tank....but when these thinks die, dont they shrink to the size of a dime? Arent they basically just water filled?

Im pretty sure he got chewed up. But Ill take a closer look later....maybe he will turn up, but I doubt it.

Bad enough to lose something, but I get p***ed when I lose something over stupidity.

Lesson learned I guess.
