Carpet itch... ooo I want one...

I've wanted a carpet forever. The standard "Nemo" with a 'nem synrdrome I guess. I blame Woodstock for the carpet thing, hers is freakin gorgeous. Plus I like the a. polymnus BW saddleback clowns.

SOOOooo... where could I put this thing?

75g: RBTA with a maroon, scopas tang, 6-line wrasse, diadema psuedochromis, 2 cleaner shrimps, 1 CBS. Various softies, bubble coral, xenia out the &$$, zoos, a torch. Two 150W MH, 10K. Cons: MiniMoe already got harassed by the 6-line, I don't know if I want to risk that again.

55g: T5, think it's 100 watts total, with MiniMoe the BW Saddle clown, yellow tang, hybrid yellow/scopas, chromis, a fast growing damsel, the so-unassuming sailfin molly, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 peppermint who really needs to go in the 75 to eat the aiptasia. Tank could use more LR, only a couple xenia in there otherwise a FO. Cons: Do NOT want Lil' Al eaten. Also lighting is inadequate.

Mike's 24g: I am not allowed to put anything in there... unless he upgrades to the 37 tall. He's got an aquapod with softies, LPS, a tomato with RoBerTA, a yellow coris and a hiding clown goby. 150W MH, 14K. Cons: small.

Now I COULD set up the 12g pod or claim the 37g for myself and totally start from scratch.... (OK, or cheat and use current tank water and pre-cured rock...)

LOL! I wish I could frag my purple haddoni for you!

Hummm... tough decision but I would only put a carpet in either the 55 or 75 gal tank because they get HUGE. The 75 gal has the strongest lighting so I would have to vote for that reef. Yes, they eat fish but only fish that run into them. Beware that they might also 'walk' around the tank until they find a spot THEY like. I've had mine to walk a lot but it never killed anycoral.
Keep in mind haddoni anemones like a lot of flow, low/no nitrAtes, strong light (MH) and a sandy bottom with adjacent rocks to hide their foot in. Mine has its foot wedge in the sand between two rocks.

The polymnus will find it within a day and the sixline will stay far away from it then.... or else... lol

Re: Carpet itch... ooo I want one...

I'm not worried too much about the 6-line, it's the scopas I'm more worried about.

I COULD put all the tangs in the 55 and the rest in the reef... oy. Decisions, decisions.

Do they eat corals? Chris&Barb had that problem. Thing ate a dang urchin too.

Its hard to care for, eats fish, will grab you and not let go, and its venomous. All for $100. What the hell do you want to get that for!?

Must be going around, I've had that same bug. I'd like to set up a 60 gallon cube with a single MH pendant for one and a mated pair of percs.

Well, according to the stuff I've read, it is a little tougher than a BTA but easier than a gigantia carpet (if I even spelled that right...) supposedly ranked in the "easier" nem category (yeah, yeah, according to LFS websites, I know). Our BTAs are pretty dang happy if I do say so myself.

They are SO cool though. My tank was a little "wiped" AFA corals in the Great Rust Incident (drippage of condensation off a non-SW-safe fixture) so I've kinda got some room to play. I don't plan on sticking my fingers anywhere near it.

Re: Carpet itch... ooo I want one...

I had a Carpet and ended up removing it just drove me crazy
It's a beautiful animal but can be problematic in smaller tanks full of sessile inverts.

The carpet will likely eat or at least kill every fish in the tank that makes contact with him except the anemone fish and more than a few of them have been eaten by carpet anemones. I do love the looks of a slimey green carpet anemone though.

Re: Carpet itch... ooo I want one...

Gorgeous animals but I got scared away by the first one I got. Didn't even last a week. I am pretty sure it was on it's way before I bought it but it was not a happy experience. I wanted it so bad and hated the fact that it died in my tank even if it wasn't my fault.
I do think the fish will fall into 2 categories. Eaten, smart enough to stay away. After that the fish should be fine but the wandering can be a bit of an issue. I have heard a number of stories where they wander into a powerhead so be sure to protect them.

Re: Carpet itch... ooo I want one...

Thanks guys. I'm going to be looking at this for a while. I'd like one but what I'd REALLY like is a dedicated tank.

*looks around dining room for more tank space*

Re: Carpet itch... ooo I want one...

The other fish will be fine if the Carpet is hosting clownfish as they will keep them away but I would be sure to have moonlights so the fish don't accidentally run into the Carpet during the night.

This was the reason I decided to return mine to the LFS besides the fact it swallowed a 5" Bluethroat Triggerfish

no offense, but im not sure about this, i have had mine for over a year and i have only seen it get one fish and that was because a damsel was picking on my clown and dashed towards the clown, missed, and he became lunch!
I tried to get to my camcorder but it was too late!

I think you shoiuld get one, great looking, clowns love it, easy to feed b/c it is so sticky, and it doesnt hurt you at all, when i feed it i try to wiggle the silverside and sometimes its so sticky that the silverside rips in half! My hand has been kind of stuck in it but thts only b/c i didnt want to pull to hard and hurt the anemone
