Held out for a long time..

I finally decided to purchase a RBTA. I have been leary of getting a nem, due to all the bad stuff that happens to them. I figure if anyone is ready for one, it's me. I bought it last friday, and today, right before my eyes, it pooped, and shriveled up. I figured it was done for, but tonight it was back open to its former glory. weird!!

Re: Held out for a long time..

Anemones have to do a lot of adjusting to new tank water. This is not unusual.

I'd have recommended that you waited until you have the dinoflagellates totally wiped out before getting an anemone, (changes in water parameters as you go through the fight) but you have it, so we'll do our best to help you keep it healthy...

They are getting under control. There is very little left. I have the upper hand on them now. The main reason I bought it, My clown pair was hosting in my open brain, and I got rid of it during the dyno outbreak, as it was on the sandbed, where the dyno was the worst. I was afraid it was going to get damaged. So, my poor little clowns were venturing out into the tank with no host, and my tang was taking advantage of the situation beating them up. Now the clowns stay in their corner again! lol..Oh yeah,... I also made sure I bought aquacultured on the BTA. (If thats what you call it on nems!).. I know, I jumped the gun a little on the nem... but things are stable as far as water params. Thanks for the concern.

I agree with this one.
Anemones certainly do that and in fact will occasionally shrivel up without any known reason. Just keep an eye on it and make sure it stays attached. In most cases they will unattach if they are getting ready to die. If in doubt, do the smell test. You will immediately know and never forget the smell.

Re: Held out for a long time..

I got lucky. I was in the hospital when my carpet died so hubby had to do the smell test. He swears he will never do it again that I have to do it.

Re: Held out for a long time..

Hey Lynn and TJ, do you bring the nem OUT of the water to smell it? Wouldn't that kill it anyway?

Nope. Mine is out of the water every water change. In fact the clowns even stay in it while it is out of the water. Now it is not for long. It is in a small tank so water changes are done quickly but a short time is perfectly fine.
Looks like this one is doing well so all is good.
