aiptasia help

I saw 2 threads that were old so i started another. It seemed like yesterday i had 5 now i think 100 in my 180 gal. would it be too upsetting to take my rock out 1 at a time and inject them with kalkwasser mix? I only have about 100 lbs of rock and only 1 bubble tip so removal would not be to difficult. Or would that upset the tank too much. I just dont want to have too much of the mix in the water? thanks for any help . Chuck

Re: aiptasia help

Peppermint shrimp.......they do a great job in my tank of keeping aptasia down.....but they don't eat the really big ones, so you'd have to squirt the larger ones. Once you get rid of the large ones they should do a pretty good job on the rest.

Peppermints are certainly worth a try. I wouldn't go after them all at once wth anything. You risk damaging your parameters.

Re: aiptasia help

Boil some water suck it up with a syringe(or a meat injector) and inject them with it near the base. You'll know when you have enough in em.

Just hot water? That will kill them?

Re: aiptasia help

Well, in the last three days, I went from one aptasia to three. I boiled some water, sucked it up in an injector, and squirted them with it. About 5 minutes later there were strands of milky substence coming out of them. I sucked that out of the water and discarded. As far as I can tell, no more aptasia...

I'll look better tomorrow evening.

Re: aiptasia help

I have a very tiny aptaisia growing on one of my turbo snails - What would kalk paste do to the snail if I put it on the shell only, then rinsed in fresh water?? Anyone have this problem before??!

Re: aiptasia help

Sounds like your turbo snail isn't so turbo. Moss doesn't grow on a rolling stone.

hehehe

I must admit, this is the first time that I've heard of an aptasia growing on a snail. Sorry, but I don't know what would happen. Others that are more familiar with this will chime in soon though, I'm sure.

Re: aiptasia help

I have tried everything to kill aiptasia. I'll second the boiling water.
Keep a tea pot going and refresh the hot water often. if you inject them well the first time you won't have to hit them again. I had to go back a few times for some of them. as they exploded and flew about the tank my butterfly fish ate the remains. fwiw the butterfly kept new ones from growing but would not touch the larger ones. I tried peps, but unless you don't feed the tank they won't eat them. now I have 6 fat shrimp that wait for mysis to blow by them.

Re: aiptasia help

I agree with all of the solutions posted here. I have one question since you seem to have one heck of an invasion in a short span of time: What are your parameters like? Seems to me pest situations take advantage of out of whack parameters. So while employing a couple of these methods, you may also want to make sure your parameters are acceptable.

Re: aiptasia help

Since the topic is semi-fresh... I'm starting to get some growing in my 75. If they get big enough will they take down a clown or other fish? Or are they more a nuisance?
