Re: Anemone Gone Crazy

probably silversides. We started feeding one of ours that formula one angel food, the frozen cubes.

Re: Anemone Gone Crazy

When I wanted one of mine to split, I'd feed heavily for a couple of days then do a major water change. Usually within 48 hours I'd have a new Rose in the tank...
BTA's are rock anemones, and as such, I always feed much more shrimp than I did silversides. I just don't know how many freshwater fish they get in nature...
Besides, being natural rock dwellers, I'm sure they get lots of nice meaty crustaceans, and mine always macked it up...gotta be careful how big of pieces you give them however. I always cut the anemone foods into chunks no bigger than 1/4" cubes. Smaller pieces are MUCH easier for them to digest.

Re: Anemone Gone Crazy

My RBTA eats anything the fish do including pellets and flake. The clown won't let me feed the nem directly. She pulls out any food I feed the nem but if I put the same food just in the tank she brings it to the nem.
Silly clown.

Re: Anemone Gone Crazy

That's really interesting, Boomer. I've wondered about silversides, but then again, they can be acclimated to live in 1.025 saltwater and they actually thrive in it. I wonder if they have a different biological makeup then, say, goldfish do...

I've often wondered the same thing about Mollies and Killies too. They both can live in anything from fresh to salt.Would be worthwhile to know for those finicky Lions.

Re: Anemone Gone Crazy

These things are not like us humans who eat 2-3 times a day, some of my LPS's will eat when fed and then they do not, but are growing a happy, my Rock Flower Anomees eat when I spot feed them, but I do that once a month, the rest of the time they are grabing regular fish food and things out of the water colume.

Re: Anemone Gone Crazy

Here's a bit from Bob Fenner on feeding anemones:

"Underfeed, underfeed, don't feed! Underfeed, underfeed, don't feed! Most losses in captive systems are the result of over-feeding. How many more times do I feel I need to write this? Bunches! Some anemones have been kept for YEARS without any intentional external feeding. Know your stock! Many anemones (especially larger species) are detritivorous (a polite term meaning they eat poop), planktivorous, and largely chemoautotrophic/photosynthesizing species/individuals that hobbyists try to over-stuff with meaty/prepared foods. My bid for largest cause of loss of anemones is the consequences (lack of oxygen, hydrogen and other sulfide production...) from over-feeding. Cut it out! Within normal temperatures and other conditions, most can and do do well on weekly feedings. If you're going on vacation, leave them alone.

For almost all varieties kept, an occasional (weekly or so) perfusion (wash?) of live brine shrimp, prepared mash of frozen or dried food, or frappe' (as in with your blender) of "fresh" marine food meant for human consumption (shellfish, shrimp, langouste, not-so-oily fish) with or without supplementation. Temporarily turn off your particulate filters and squirt the food onto their tentacular surface."
