Is my anemone dying?

For my husbands birthday on the 28th my mother went out and bought him an anemone. We have never had an anemone before so have been reading madly about how to care for it. From some pictures that I have seen it looks to be a magnifica? When we first brought it home it looked happy:

now it looks like its dying:

can someone tell me whats wrong?
Also I read that your not supposed to buy one that has a gaping mouth. Ours had a gaping mouth...why?

Re: Is my anemone dying?

They do tend to look "deflated" and "wilted" at times. It's part of their whole routine.

What are your current water test results?

What type of lighting do you have?

What type/size tank is it in?

And Welcome to RS. It's a great place to be

Re: Is my anemone dying?

ok first thing first, how much light do you have and flow, that species is a ritteri, they are usually very shallow so bright light is a must and with tidal flows usually pretty heavy. i would recomend moderate to heavy flow, the reason you dont want a gaping mouth its usually a sign of turnout wich means they usually turn there selves inside out when there not doing so good. but they usually have milky streamers coming off of them. which i didnt see. try puting him on the bottom in the sand close to some flow. what are your params on your tank. thanks fish

Re: Is my anemone dying?

Well it's a 55 gallon with a medium/hard water flow nearer to the top. When it began to hide and shrivel I removed some rocks and put him on the bottom then I aimed a power head directly above his head. He's looking a bit better. We recently ran out of most of our testing solutions but my godmother is buying him a new test kit for his birthday so we should be getting that today or tommorow morning.
oh and our tank is just home to:
2 porquipine puffers (I know...I know but luckilythey do leave the anemone alone)
1 clownfish maybe a Percula maybe an Ocellaris (not quite sure)
some hermit crabs and snails
1 Debelius' Reef Lobster

Welcome to RS!

What kind of light do you have? Anemonies require strong lighting in order to survive. It's also advisable to supplement their food source (light) with pieces of krill or silverside.

Re: Is my anemone dying?

Just from the picture i can see it is a lighting issue to start. Pc's from the look of it.
Also it could be a salinity issue. You have zero coralline and that tells me two other things, new tank and no calcium. It looks as if you set this tank up for fish only and you put an anemone into it. Anemones need a reef like prams to survive.
I recomend returning it until your ready for one.

They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Re: Is my anemone dying?

unfortunatly I called and the LFS refuses to take it back.
We weren't planning on getting any coral as we are slowly building up a better lighting system and slowly adding more LR, but my mother thought that this would be the perfect present since my hubby always said that he would like to eventually get one.
What should I do? my hubbies the salt water fish guy so I'm not sure what the lighting system and bulbs equal out to be.
Besides the lighting issue is that all it could be or is it many factors? Should I just try to sell it to another fish store?

Re: Is my anemone dying?

Try selling it or honestly GIVE it to someone with High Intensity lighting. It must have very good and bright lighting to survive. Due to it degrading that quick I suspect it's more than just ONE item. Get it into another tank before it "expires" and potentially pollutes that one. Also call the LFS and tell them THANKS for NOTHING and you'll take your business elsewhere. They've done you an Un-Just thing and you should be upset with them.

If you can get someone to take and care for your anemone then over time we can help you to build your tank to where it needs to be to support such a beautiful creature. I'm so sorry for this to have to happen. It's a shame but it happens ALL the time.

Good luck and we're here to help.
