New anemone.

I put a new rose bta in my tank, he was out in the open for awhile and now I found him behind my LR wall where there's not really any light, also the clowns won't host with him behind there (because they never go back there) and I'm worried about him not being able to eat there. Should I move him, it'd be hard with the position he's in, i'd have to move some rock around I guess. I'm mostly worried because I just read this off the web, "These anemones tend to wander around the tank more than others, sometimes causing their own deaths from lack of light"

Re: New anemone.

I would let it go where it wants. If you try to remove it you may injure it in the process.

Re: New anemone.

BTA's are known wanderers and recluses....they will hide then pop out, move and hide, then move again.,,,,you cannot control any anemone....you have to either deal with it,,,,or get rid of it....its that simple.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: New anemone.

I just came home from a day and a half trip and I found just his foot. It appears he is fully retracted, this is normal right? I was worried but then I did a quick research and found that they do that.

Re: New anemone.

If the foot is still attached I would give it some time. My rbta can change from looking great to looking awful in a matter of minutes then back again just as quickly.

Re: New anemone.

How long has this tank been setup and what type of lighting are you using and how many watts ? My advice would be leave it alone otherwise you'll only increase the stress level for the animal. If the tank is well established with the proper lighting then the Anemone will be fine and once it acclimates it'll move to a better area where it can receive proper lighting/flow.

Re: New anemone.

I fed it last night and right after he came out, now he looks fine. Tanks been up for 4 months and 48 watt T5 lighting. I hope he comes back out front so he can host with my Onyx percula. =]

Re: New anemone.

What are the dimensions of the tank ? The 48 watts of light isn't much for a hosting Anemone such as the BTA. I would look to increase the lighting levels for long term success.

Re: New anemone.

I'm planning on getting another one of the same light... Funding around this time of year wasn't allowing two at the moment. When I feed him, I don't need to get it near his mouth right? Where he is, I can't reach there but I got a few mysis stuck on his tenticles.

Re: New anemone.

Well what size tank are we talking about ? Depending on the size/dimensions the additional light may or may not be enough.

Re: New anemone.

Anemones really need lots of light. IMO, for that depth and gallonage tank, you need 4x T5 48w bulbs minimum.

Re: New anemone.

the Anemone will move the Mysis to it's mouth if it sticks to the tentacles.

You really do need to properly address the lighting ASAP. Anemone's appear to do well for a while and then just start going down hill. What is REALLY happening is that they have a very slow metabolism and without proper lighting they just slowly wither. They need significant lighting and very good water quality. Keep on top of your game and up those lights.

Also note that when/if your clowns host is very random. It may or may not happen at all. It could start today, take six months or just never happen. Feeling lucky?

Re: New anemone.

The Anenmone moved to behind the LR where it's dark. Should I leave him there if he needs lighting? Before everyone said leave him and now I'm hearing they need alot of lighting. lol I'm confused. Before I bought him I asked and was told my lighting was good enough for him.
