| Tunicate | I started my tank back in december 2006(8 months ago). I have a 90 Gal tank with 140 Lbs of live rock. I have never lost a fish (except for 2 percula clowns jumping out of my tank, and found them dried on my carpet). I have a yellow tang, a lawnmower blenny, a green serpent star, open brain corals, some zoas, bubble corals, turbo snails....Everything is doing great... This is the lighting I got: 2x150 HQI 10k Metal Halide, 2x130w Dual Actinic 420nm/ 460nm for a total of 560 watts. I would like to buy an anemone. Just wondering how long do I have to wait before I can buy one... as my tank is 8 months old.... Ive had people saying 6 months... others 1 year.... Also, I wanted to know what would be a good anemone for a newbie? I would like to get an anemone that a clown could possibly host....(I would like to buy another clown).... Any suggestions? Thanx |

| Golden Moray | Re: How long do I have to wait???? For safety sake most say a year. I've also heard that a bubble tentacle anemone may be added after six months if all parameters are good and the tank has been stable. What type of anemone/clownfish combination are you considering? Sorry to hear of your clownfish jumping. I've never experianced that however I did loose a diamond watchman goby that way.

| Tunicate | Re: How long do I have to wait???? Actually, I lost 2 percula clowns that way. I am not excatly set on 1 type of clown in particular.... What type of clown would host the bubble anemone....? Of perhaps, what type of clown would be susceptible of hosting this anemone? My preference is the perculas... But it seems like I had no luck with them. they both jumped out of the tank... My water parameters are good. I never lost a fish in my tank ever since I started... i took the safe road, and took it slow... Tryed to have as much patience as i could... My water is stable.... I checked it about 1 week ago...and it's always the same.. I test it about once every 2 months to be on the safe side. But it always test just foine, everyuthing at 0. i guess the live rock keeps everything stable...and i don t have a lot of livestock in there either... Ammonia 0 Nitrate 0 Nitrite 0 PH 8.2 Salinity 1.23 The only thing ive had issues with ever since i got my tank is the calcium!!! It has been high since day 1, and i don t put any additives. calcium is over 500. And it just won t go down, no matter how many water changes I make. but everything looks like is ok in this calcium... or maybe my calcium test is just way off... i don tknow... |

| Over Achiever | Re: How long do I have to wait???? I would say that it is safe to put in any anemone at this point. The bubble tips anemone is a good beginner specimen. You can get your calcium to go down by slowly raising your alk. You can do this by purchasing an alk buffer and following the directions. When Alk goes up, Ca goes down. You may want to get this in line before adding your anemone though. BTW, what is your alk test reading? |

| Tridacna maxima ![]() | Re: How long do I have to wait???? I would also wait to get the anemone until you get your calcium corrected and you are used to dosing the regular supplements that your tank needs. Make sure you check the magnesium level. It should be about 1350 ppm. If it is off, sometimes it is hard to keep the calc/alk in balance.

| Acropora | Re: How long do I have to wait???? Hi together .... I think I have quite good experiences in run of the last years with anemones can do, bubble tentacle anemone you can do quietly already in your tank, this should be no problem. Other anemones are substantially more sensitive there, there you would still have to wait, but bubble tentacle anemone .... no problem, that is a hardy. my last pure anemone tank: ![]()

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: How long do I have to wait???? I think you are ready for a BTA if you want one. Just keep a close eye on your parameters (more like once a week or more) Also keep in mine that anemones are mobile. They can and will move to wherever they like it in the tank. This may not be where you want it. They have also been known to knock over corals that are in their way.

| Golden Moray | Re: How long do I have to wait???? You will also be happy to know that the BTA is probably one of your best choices for the Percula clown or Ocellaris clown (which most folks call Percula). Here's my favorite link when it comes to supplementing. http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/chem_calc3.htm I recommend that you use the flash version. It will tell you how much of what you need to add to balance your chemistry.

| Tunicate | Re: How long do I have to wait???? But how do I know for sure that the clown will host my anemone? What are the chances that the percula or ocelaris would host the bubbletip anemone? Dr. hank, the link that you posted does not work.... And, hum.. What are the chances that the anemone will knock over my corals? Can I buy some type of glue for my corals to stick them on the live rock? Does that even exist? And how do you handle the anemones? what is the bet method to intruduce them to a tank? Dripping method? and them, how do you take them from the bucket to the tank? Cause I know i'd be scared to touch this gouwy thing....even with gloves... Any tips? ![]() |

| Over Achiever | Re: How long do I have to wait???? Well there is no guarantee that any clown will host with any anemone. However, it is instinctual for them to do this and there is a very high likelyhood that percs/oscellaris will host, eventually. It seems that tank raised clowns take longer to host than wild caught specimens, but my tank raised percs had no problems hosting with their BTA. The comment about them moving is more geared towards them stinging and killiing sessile corals rather than knocking them over. Coral frags and rocks can be glued to the LR with Super Glue Gel or coral glue that you pick up at your LFS. Acclimating should be via the drip method. If you are weary about touching the animal, then get someone else to transfer the anemone to the tank. I have found that when the anemone is attached to the acclimation vessel, the best weay to get it to release is to tip the vessel so that the anemone is out of the water and let gravity and the weigh of the animal to cause it to release. Good luck! |
