clown hosting Anoneme

I've heard that a long tenticle anoneme will host clowns correct?

I've also heard that captive clown will not take to ANY anoneme. Is this accurate?

I have 2 tank bred perculas and I just bought this real pretty long tenticle. Any chance they'll find peace or home with each other???

Thanks

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

There is always a chance in my mind.
For some reason many people have had success with taping a picture of clowns hosting in an anemone to the tank. Somehow this helps the fish know what to do.

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

Long tentacle anemones will host yes! There are captive bred clowns that will host...not all of them though. Depends on the clown. There are certain clowns that take to one anemone more than the other. Give them some time and they can form a possible pair. I have seen tomatoes, black percs, maroons and sebae clowns in long tentacle anemones before. Just give them some time.

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

Jorgens, I am so excited! Just today my 2 tank raised true percula clowns hosted with my green BTA after 3 weeks in the tank. Not sure with the Long Tenticle, but it seems that instinct is very strong in the tank raised clowns. Give it some time, I'm a believer.

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

The purpose of the symbiotic relationship between the clownfish and Anemone is protection. Many of the Clownfish that are tank bred may not feel the need to develop this relationship or it could take time whereas in the wild Clowns would have little chance of survival without it. I have had success in the past with tank bred B&W Ocellaris accepting a BTA as a host but it took several months, it should be quicker with True Perculas.

Quote:
At about this time I would expect the reader to wonder how and why clownfish choose the anemone that they do. Thankfully, you are not the only person that has ever contemplated this. Arvedlund, et. al. (1999) found that the eggs of the clownfish were imprinted with cues during the development process. The eggs are laid nearby the base of the host anemone of the parents, where the imprinting occurs. Olfactory cues are imprinted according to the mucus released from the oral disc and tentacles of the anemone. These olfactory cues assist the juvenile clownfish in locating the same species of anemone that its parents preferred. Arvedlund's work was an extension of the work performed by Elliot in 1995 where they concluded clownfish species were able to track the scents of hosting anemones from as far away as 8m down current (Elliot, 1995).

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

How to tell if there true percs or not. My LFS ( which i don't trust much) claimed "percula" clownfish. Tank bred.

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

They are actually osc. clowns but are very similar to Percula clowns... almost the same thing. You said that you traded one in to the LFS because it was a mis- bar... the one in the bottom left is also a misbar. I personally love my misbars. they are cool!

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

mine are mis-bar... all it means is they don't have full connecting body bars. Most will sell them as captive bread percs, I know the store that I used to work at sold them as percs fully knowing they are oscallerius clowns.

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

ahhh... so it's a good bet mine are ocsies and may not even be tank bred??? that'd piss me off if you'll pardon the language. I'm not big into taking things off the reef and mis labeling them. I know it's a small part but i'd like to try to help keep from taking things out of the ocean. I believe in frags and tank bred fish. yes I may have a few treats but most of my tank i want tank raised.

Thanks for the clairfication. It's obvious I still have alot to learn in this hobby, and that some will thrive upon the niave.

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

they are definitely tank bread...otherwise as cheeks said they would already be in that anemone for protection!

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

also I was just looking at the pics of your tank. Did that anemone cost you like 15-20 dollars? if so thats not a LTA that is a condalactus or Atlantic anemone.

the way tell the difference is that the ocellaris's black border is wider...most of the time...

Re: clown hosting Anoneme

Those clowns look a little young to determine if they are true percs or ocellaris clowns.
The two ocellaris clowns I have where tank raised, it took them almost a year before the hosted in my sebae anemone.
