what anenome should I buy?

I am planning on setting up a reef tank 78 g and I'd like an anenome. Don't worry I won't do anything stupid like put it in the tank before it is ready but I'd like to have some idea on what my longer term plans are while i'm still deciding on what setup I'll have.

I've heard that some anenomes are short lived in tanks and some are tricky so I'm looking for one that won't outgrow my tank and will be relatively forgiving to a newbie and I don't like the idea of dooming one of these beautiful creatures to an early death when it would have lived for many years in the wild.

What aneome should i get?

I have a white sabea anemone that ive had for 4 years, seems very hardy. It will also host just about any clownfish.Put good light, med to high current, and keep your water quality high and you should have no problem.GL

i would not get any anemone till the tank is appx a year old and very stable. it will take you a while to get your husbandry skills perfected.

Re: what anenome should I buy?

"white sabea anemone" I have yet to see a true white sabea (Heteractis crispa), this anemone is normally a brown in color. When you see them white it usually means they have been bleached buy the collector or distributor so they are more apealing. A healthy sebae will get quite large as well, mine is appox 2 years old, it was white and very small, it is now brown colored with lime green body, blue to purple tips and the size of a large plate.

I agree with witty....also remember that anemone's will move around..and they usually have a stronger sting than most corals, so the possibility of it killing a coral is pretty good, I bought my LTA when it was 4" across now its over 12"....plan accordinly.

That is a good attitude since anemones #'s are dwindling in the wild. I would suggest you get a Bubble Tip Anemone as these are relatively hardy and will easily reproduce in aquariums, I would suggest you get a clone if you can.

I would avoid the Sebae, Ritteri or the Carpet anemones as these grow quite large and don't ship very well, have an abysmal record in captivity and their sting is quite potent potentially doing severe harm to your corals. What type of lighting will you be setting up ?

Re: what anenome should I buy?

Most people say that bubble tips are the most forgiving.
I am extremely glad to hear you are waiting for the tank to really establish first. Anemones are slow to show their displeasure so they can look just fine a long time after an injury or in an unfit environment.
As to having one with corals, as long as you realize it can and probably will take at least one "walkabout": of the tank and have your corals secured appropriately, I don't know a reason why not. Once they find a happy space sometimes they stay for years and then suddenly take a tour.

Ok, thanks for the tip, I'll try to secure my corals well. Does anyone have experience of an anemone that never settled down ie is always wondering about knocking things over?

My LTA will wander... usually because he is upset about something.

Re: what anenome should I buy?

I also had an LTA that would wander around and they're a bit different than other anemones as they have the ability to float around the tank, after several days of doing this I got fed up and returned it to the LFS.
