Found BTA in Powerhead Filter

This sucks. Poor guy was not totally sucked in, but a good bit of him was within the plastic pre-filter. I was able to extricate him sucessfully. His base appears to be fine, but there were 2-3 tenticles that I had to syphon out of the tank. Can he survive this?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Found BTA in Powerhead Filter

Maybe. It depends on the individual anemone. They USUALLY can survive, IF there is no damage to the "body/foot".
I am a strong believer than if you have anemones, you need to modify your powerheads and pumps like this:

Not the prettiest things, (but as you see, they will cover with coralline) but IMO, if you have an anemone in your tank, it's your responsibility to give it the best care you can, and that includes protecting it from itself when it goes on a "walk-about".

Re: Found BTA in Powerhead Filter

I agree... This powerhead was very high in the tank, and I didn't think it would venture that far up in the tank. He seems to be re-inflating his tenticles now, so maybe we will make it. Is there a name for those filters, so I can modify my powerheads?

Thanks for your help...

Re: Found BTA in Powerhead Filter

They are called Hagen Quick filters. They come with a fiber filter inside, which I toss out. The larger ones should be available almost anywhere, while the smaller ones are much harder to find. They are made to fit the Hagen line of powerheads, but you can make them work on almost any powerhead or small pump with a bit of ingenuity.

Re: Found BTA in Powerhead Filter

It has been much to my suprise that our anenomes are amazingly resiliant. Don't give up on them. They can survive more than I ever imagined.

Good water quality and circulation... repeat.

Re: Found BTA in Powerhead Filter

yours have certainly been "thru the wringer" over the past couple of years. They ARE resiliant, and CAN survive a lot. I had a small green clone get sucked into a Maxi-jet that only had the small screen that comes stock with them. Mangled it up pretty bad, but it survived. Took a LONG time to recover, and it wouldn't eat for a couple of months. It set up home inside the prefilter box for my Remora pro, and recuperated. Even after I removed the skimmer, I left the big ugly box in the tank, till the anemone moved out. Took several months, but it finally came out, and started eating again.

Sorry for the bad pic, but it's the only one of the survivor...(upper right)

Re: Found BTA in Powerhead Filter

As of this morining the BTA is totally inflated and appears to be doing fine. He looks a bit beat up, but what do you expect after being inhaled into a powerhead. Thanks for the input guys.
