Any tricks on removing a huge anemone?

My Bubble tip anemone is going bye bye. I am trading him in if I can get him out of the tank.. he is getting way to big and i keep having to move corals away from him. it is about 4-5 years old and prob. about a 12-18 inches in diameter( maybe even more). The problem is he has his foot wedged in between two big rocks. and he is attached to the 2 side rocks and of course a huge rock below it.... any tricks on removing the big monster..

Re: Any tricks on removing a huge anemone?

Nothing that I ever found really worked well. I've tried powerheads blasting directly on them, icing the foot, picking gently with a credit card to loosen the grip, NOTHING ever worked very well. I finally had to resort to either selling the rock with the anemone, (or loaning it out, because they generally move once they're in a new tank) or using a hammer & chisel to break the rock and send them with a piece of rock...they can be SO stubborn sometimes...and othertimes, you'd love it if they'd find one place and stay there!

Re: Any tricks on removing a huge anemone?

Just an idea! try moving the lights to where you want her to go like on a sandbed or sheet of acrylic/glass. I'm no expert but if the conditions where the anemone are arent comfortable then it will assumably move, I may be way off base here but it is certainly not too evasive.

Shade it over the area that you want to move / detach from, and it will move out from under the shaded area, in search of light. Heard this from one of Anthony Calfos talks.

Re: Any tricks on removing a huge anemone?

Billy, the LTA should be a sand dweller, with it's foot buried deep in sand, so it should be easy to move...just reach in and it will retract into the sand, then dig in and pop it out!!

Blue eyes, most people can handle a BTA with little or no problem. In about 20 yrs of keeping them, I've only been stung noticeably one time...and I still have the scar! Rubber gloves, either surgical gloves or even dishwashing gloves will provide enough protection that you don't get stung.

Re: Any tricks on removing a huge anemone?

If it's wedged between 2 rocks it should be easy to remove by seperating the rocks. My RBTA is wedged into a deep crevace on the LR it hasn't moved in at least a couple of years I would never be able to remove it without doing damage to the foot.

Re: Any tricks on removing a huge anemone?

wow...an LTA with no sand...I've seen a few using a planter full of sand, but never one with ZERO sand...I'm surprised it's done so well...You must be doing SOMETHING right!
Mine set it's foot clear to the bottom of the 5" deep sandbed I had in that tank...you could see the bottom of the foot looking thru the bottom of the tank!

Re: Any tricks on removing a huge anemone?

Nice pic Billy.

I have had luck with holding the rock just above the water's surface with the anemone upside down...then dunk the rock/anemone in/out of the water until it lets go. This has worked like a charm and doesn't injure it. It is good excercise for the arms too!

Re: Any tricks on removing a huge anemone?

The huge anemone is gone... had to get rid of it. it was roaming the tank since my guy pal ( ) got it loose . Now I have a huge hole where it was. Im gonna have to go shopping this weekend. Oh yea they gave me $60 for the monster..... My maroon clown Is P.O.. I do have a red bubble tip anemone also, but it is small.... It will have to switch homes.
