annenomes & clowns

I was told today that tank raised percula clowns will not bond with an annenome. Any one know if this is true?

Re: annenomes & clowns

its not a never will bond thing, but they simply dont know to do it by example. many will begin to be hosted with something. but others simply wont. also clowns do not need a host in an aquarium, they can lead happy lives without ever seeing an amenone.

They might be happy to never do it, but I wont be LOL

So when you say they need an example does this mean 2 perculas will not host without an example? I bought them as small juveniles & dont have an annenome yet.

i think if they want to they will do so, but they don't need the anemone to be happy... also different clowns will tend to host in different anemonae , some anemonae are tough to care for....
the basic BTA is easy, and my captive bred ocellaris went right to the bta

I didnt plan on getting one(annenome) in the near future as my tank is somewhat fresh. I have a small frogspawn frag & I have hoped they will take to that, I have heard they will.

The guy that I got the Frogspawn from have a pair of clowns that wont go 12" from frospawn coral & they even lay eggs below it. There are many anneomes in the tank but they still pick the coral.

Re: annenomes & clowns

As you can see...they will host to about anything. I've even read about people who make a fake anemone out of rubber bands. It's whatever makes them happy. Good luck and enjoy the clowns. An Anemone is not necessary and could be tricky IME.

Re: annenomes & clowns

I have 2 ocellaris. They were one of the first fish I got for my tank.
Well, I really, really, really wanted to see the bonding relationship, so I searched and searched. I was too new and did not have the right parameters for an anenomae...so that was out. I read and saw may Colts sucessfully hosting clowns, I bought one.....no hosting.....I bought a Torch in hopes for some interest....nope, didn't happen. It does appear that both my clowns are in love with my mag float though, but its no consolation.
I have almost traded them in for a younger pair. But I'm having a hard time doing that. ~ Good luck

This is not true especially if whomever is raising them uses a host anemone in the tank. My LFS had a small BTA in one of their rearing tanks and there was about 30 tiny ones being hosted...very cool to see.

I also has a B&W Ocellaris which was TR and even though it took about 3 months was hosted by a Sebae. I had a wild caught Percula that refused to be hosted by a Carpet and BTA Anemone preferring my Frogspawn.

Re: annenomes & clowns

Just to add my 2 cents..... I thought my two clowns would never host with my anemone I had in the tank.... well after almost a year, they have finally decided to make it home (last night as a matter of fact) coolest thing ever....
