I've done my best to get in the habit of saying "Zo" as in not "Zoo."

Placement does matter to an extent, unfortunately, it varied a lot by the specific specimen IME. If they're unhappy, they'll tell you. Start with moderate lighting and flow and see what works for you.

They most certainly can be on the sandbed, assuming they're already attached to rock.

As far as spreading, they will actually dicide and get more polyps. I think the longer you leave them in one spot, the better chance you have of getting good growth from them.
