| It's very possible that's what happened and it happens pretty often. I think you can use zip ties or rubber bands to secure the sponge on the powerhead. When you do, it will cut down the flow and you'll have to clean the sponges of detritus regularly.
If that's what happened, I'm really sorry to hear it... but don't throw the tank, consider it another lesson learned and move on. But keep an eye on your water quality, dead anemones can really pollute the living daylights out of a tank.
