Smelly Fuge

I did my water change today and decided to trim my Macro in the fuge and noticed that the flow is slower that usual. When I started moving things arond I noticed the sewer like smell coming from the fuge. I didn't see any dead animals in there but the smell was pretty strong. I increased the flow in the fuge and it is now slowly going away. Is that bad for the the fish and corals? I haven't seen anything unusual as far as critters' behavior. Any suggestions as to what should i do to prevent this from happening again.

TIA
Noel
