First, it is not a Atlantic long spined urchin. There are not enough spines or long enough. It is a juv Echinometra sp.


Echinometra viridis
They graze on algae and rarely coralline algae.They are noted for producing many algae free reef patches.

Look to see if there are white rings at the base of the spines.

Echinometra lu****er
This is a burrowing/rock-bore urchin and feed mostly at night. They usually bore into a calcareous substance and make a burrow to live in during the day. They will remove any coralline algae around there burrow but that is mostly it. They like to eat "drifting" or settled algae. So, they world like to stay in or near their burrow at all times. They are not roamers but may be in a reef tank

They do not have the white ring.
