I did the same thing, my LFS quarantines and uses copper. I would have them hold the fish for two weeks so that I could observe them and confirm they were eating and healthy. I would bring them home, float the bag to temp, drain all the water, to avoid copper in my tank, and then let them slip out of the bag. Never once lost a fish and no diseases ever attacked my fish in three years.
You just have to be really careful, and you can minimize the risk.
