I would go ahead and turn off the skimmer. It seems to just make it worse. When we did this we tried turning the skimmer back on about once a week but it took over a month for it to react anything near normal.
If you do run the skimmer, keep in mind you are removing salt water. Test your salinity daily and you may need to add salt water as top off in this case. The only way to know is by testing.
