They are reported to split as a result of stress from less than stellar conditions. This way different ones can move to different areas trying to ensure survival of the species. They can split for many reasons (not all being good).

Thanks Allen. Quick update: Well, he gained some color while in my tank, then bleached when he went to the restaurants 250G tank. But it looks like he's doing find in his new home. I didnt want to try and get him out of the rock, so I ended up just giving the rock to the owner. I guess he really loves that rock or something, cause he's still in it hehe. The owner wanted to pay, and I said there was no need. So he gave me 20lbs worth of ahi tuna! so Ive had sashimi and ahi poke (hawaiian salt with raw tuna and green onions and soy sauce) for the last 2 days hehe.
