I wouldn't get larger grain sand. I would get the fine stuff 3-4 inches. I was talking about larger pieces of rubble not sand. They can move pieces larger than they are. Just give him a variety of rocks and shells and he will use what he wants. You may need to keep adding until he is done with his burrow. Leave some in there even after they are established since they sometimes decide to move even after their burrow is done.
These fish have a great personality but are very picky. The most important thing is to get a healthy eating one to begin with. If buying from a LFS make them feed it in front of you before buying.
