Cover the top well. Get some large pieces or rocks and shells for them to make their home with. I started with crushed coral for mine and he soon became so unhappy he quit eating. Dentoid told me to give him larger building material and he instantly started building and now has quite the palace and eats like a piggy.
The only other thing I would say is keep looking until you find a nice healthy one and watch it eat before you buy. Many of them are sick to begin with and I am convinced that is one reason so many are lost.
