Travis thanks for the great thread. I couldn't wait to try this stuff out when I read it. Finally got the chance to do it and here are some results:

These were taken with my Canon S40 in the maximum resolution using the aperture priority mode (my favorite mode). I found that hardest part was using the healing brush. It didn't always get the results I expected. I also found that selecting "soft light" on the background copy created by the "high pass" option help reduce the noise caused. I lost a little vibrancy from it but the noise was too hard to look at without the change.
