Diatoms feed on silicates exclusivly and form on the sand surface first then on rock.They will go away when there food supply is gone.They are greatly effected by flow,more flow less diatoms.If the growth under your sand is redish in color it is more than likely bacterial growth and thats a good thing.Diatoms are the oldest known living thing on earth so they are pretty good at what they do,but on there own they are not very mobile.penatrating a sand bed is not in there resume'.
