Question This may be obvious but not to me.

PLEASE HELP! I have put a 10 gallon tank inside the stand of my 180. Just in case my clown eggs hatch and i am able to get some of them out. I plummed a mag 3 which lays in my fuge which runs a homemade media filter. I installed a t fitting and ran an additional inlet from the pump into the 10 gal. and also ran an outlet from the 10 gal. so essentially the water is coming from the 10 and returning to the 10 except the mag would not pump unless i had an open fitting next to it. i have installed ball valves to be able to slow the flow if needed. My question is with water seeking its own level should the tank and my fuge be at the same height in case of power failure,? or can the 10 be higher? any help is as alway appreciated. Thanks chuck.
