Ok has anyone here called a Credit Card company and tried to "Cancel" your credit card?

We paid our Capital One card off in full last night after having a HUGE balance on it for a LONG LONG time. When I paid it off last night I called customer service to "Cancel My Account" and was told "You'll have to call a "Customer Account Rep" during normal business hours. So I took down the number so I could call them today.

This morning I called the phone # and spoke with a "Customer Account Rep" in order to "Cancel My account". Well after I went through an extensive "Identification Process" she asked what she could do to "Help" me. I explained that I had paid my balance off in FULL yesterday and would like my account completely canceled and wanted this in writing ASAP. She started with the "spill" saying if I would keep it they would give me a VERY low interest rate. I thanked her for the offer but kindly refused because I don't "Do DEBT" any more. Then she asked if I used any OTHER credit cards and of course I said no. Her next statement sort of "Pi&&ed" me off. She said, "Mr. Newland in all honesty you "OWE" it to your family to always have a credit card in your wallet for emergencies and such. You don't want to disappoint or jeopardize your families well being do you?" That about got my goat. I kept my cool and explained that I "Don't do CREDIT" and I have my "emergency fund" fully covered and it's INTEREST free!

Then I was read the "Riot Act" of credit cards. Blah blah blah.... 30 days AFTER a Zero Balance you can request to cancel the account. If at any time during those 30 days any charges, fees or penalties are occurred on that account the 30 day period is negated until the account is paid to ZERO again.

I explained that my account IS at Zero and I want it LOCKED/CLOSED/SHUT down so that no charges can be added. She "checked" my account and said it was YET to be paid in full. The amount HAS been cleared through my bank but is YET to be applied to my account. The good news is that I have a confirmation # and a print out showing the confirmation #, date and time. she said there is nothing that can be done until AFTER the 30 days it can't be done! I was beside myself but I took her name and customer ID and made full documentation of this.

Who wants to bet that at SOME time in the next 30 days there will be some type of "Annual" fees or charges applied to my account? If that happens I will go ballistic!

It's not enough that credit companies are literally RUINING families and businesses across our country but they wont even let you out when you pay for YEARS without missing a payment! Crooks through and through!!

Seriously people, give "Living Debt Free" a shot! Worse case you can always go back into debt at any moment
