Re: New to...well everything!

In a 14g tank you have room for one smallish fish or two if you can keep water quality near perfect! A general rule of thumb is 1" of ADULT fish per 5 gallons of water. Take your 14 gallon tank. Add sand and rock and you're lucky to still have 10 gallons of usable water. That limits you to one smallish fish. ANY more than that and you're only setting u for a tank crash and roller coaster of problems. (Problems = $$ and heart ache).

Michael's right. Starfish are questionable in any tank but for any type of long term survival they do need a much larger tank.

Are the lights stock? If so, it's a good idea to upgrade them right off the bat so you can start planning your long term tank now and work towards it.

good luck and HAPPY REEFING!!

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!
