Get them when they are new sprouts with no leaves. Put them in saltwater and sunlight to get them to grow. Some people say you can start them in fresh and then move them but that is not the case.
They are also not a great nutrient exporter since they grow so slowly. Be sure to rinse the salt off of the leaves daily and look carefully for dying leaves. If the leaves fall back into the water so do the nutrients you are trying to get rid of.
Now if you somehow have a vey large stand of mangroves that is an entirely different story.
