I had my 36"x36"x24" cube made from 3/4" acrylic to prevent this.
I also recommend using cell-cast acrylic... IIRC it doesn't absorb as much water as extruded, and it's also stronger.
Just to add, cell cast also handles stresses much better than extruded, ie., extruded will craze long before cast as it . Crazing *can* (if bad enough) lead to material failure.
