I would recommend 1/2" acrylic at a minimum for any tank 24" or larger... 3/8" may 'work', but it'll also flex quite a bit, giving the 'fisheye' effect when you look at the tank.
I had my 36"x36"x24" cube made from 3/4" acrylic to prevent this.
I also recommend using cell-cast acrylic... IIRC it doesn't absorb as much water as extruded, and it's also stronger.
