A true coast to coast like you stated Greg, would encompass the whole height of the tank (24"). Therefore you could run all your plumbing internally through the bottom. Doing the math L x W divided by 231 would give you the amount in gallons that a true top to bottom coast to coast would take up... In my case that would be 18g. Again, I'm not sure if I want to give up that much internal space.
Terry was speaking of a coast to coast system that went all the way across, but only went about 3-4" down from the waters surface. I think that way you would have to plumb externally.
