I have a friend starting a nano tomarrow is there any differences between a nano and say umm a 120g tank? besides the obvious?

any help would be great. Like:

does he need a skimmer?
PHs (i know one but what about the GPH?)
heater (one 50 watter)
light for low light coral, shrooms, leather, etc
amount of rock (12g nano) like 6-10 lbs?
really dont want a DSB but cant have a sump on a nano right?
