I found the picture.
That green plastic thing,(Or old hang on filter) is where you can see the three tubes entering from below. The hose on the left is the water entering from a powerhead. That smaller plastic container was removed, it took the air bubbles out of the tubes but it was not needed.
Of course three powerheads could be used but they would have to be run very slow. The slower the better. You are looking for a little more than a trickle. Too much flow and nitrate may go up. Also you will push too much dirt under there.
You can see the sponge just below the surface to make maintenance easy. I barely get my hands wet.
