You say saltwater tank... any live rock and corals?
For that, you could just use any of the common ceramic media available for canisters. The live rock would become a detrius trap and not solve your problem.
Sounds to me you need a good protein skimmer, and if you don't have any live rock in your tank, that would be a better place to put it.
