Using the simple corner sponge filter not only provides a biological filter, but keeps the surface water moving with the rising large bubbles. There are no intake tubes or anything to interfere with the fish. My local LFSs all carry them, so get one online if you can't find it.

Starting a biological filter with ammonia is a bit misleading. The entire microbe array needs more than just ammonia, it needs other proteins. You can use ammonia but also be sure to add food to the tank. Still the best guarantee is to let it run in an established aquarium.
