When trying to keep betta's together, you need at least 4 females to every male, this allows the male's aggression to be split amongst all the females. betta females can be kept together without any aggression.Some sites recommend never keeping male bettas with any other bettas as they can be too agressive. When breeding betta's, the breeding female is usually placed in a glass cylinder for the first day, this is to protect her from the males overly aggressive courting which can often kill the female. They also seem to be quite picky about their mates, if they don't like the female or vice versa, they can either totally ignore each other or fight to the death.
