Ok, I have lots of questions and comments.

Today I cleaned the tank and did a 20 gallon water change. I found an area under my bioballs, before the spongy, that was FULL of foul looking brown gunk. I cleaned all of that out. I rinsed my filter floss and sponges with fresh water. I cleaned a tiny bit of algae off the glass. I will do another water test in a few hours.

I have a small 5 gallon tank I used to use for keeping freshwater livebearers to feed my lion fish. It has a cover, light, and a hang-on filter/pump. I also have a 10 gallon tank with nothing. I have a few pieces of dead coral that used to be in my display a long time ago. (Bought dead.)

I had an idea and I will need your help. Since I have very little livestock and no corals, what if I move the living things into one of those aquariums and then re-do my display tank. Get a bunch of live rock, replace my live sand. Make any changes to the plumbing/equipment I need to do. Then let it cycle while my livestock is still in the "quarantine" tank. When the tank is ready, I can move my guys back in.

If you guys think this will work, I will need to know what I need to make the quarantine tank. I don't know if I have everything I need already or if there is something I need to buy (hopefully not too expensive.) I also thought if this idea works, I can keep the little tank going as either a permanent quarantine tank or refugium (if I'm understanding the concept correctly.)

Also, can I use any of this to my advantage as a saltwater aquarium owner? I have a 45 foot boat with a giant bait well and I'm SCUBA certified with all of my own equipment. I live next to the Gulf of Mexico.

Here are some pics I took today when I cleaned my tank.

What is this?

Here is a pic of my live rock...

This is what it looks like under my tank when I removed everything (including the skimmer) to clean it. Is this called a sump? Am I utilizing it the best way?

There is some nasty brown goo in my bioballs. Do you know what this is? Is it bad? How do I get rid of it?

Here's the tank after I cleaned up and reorganized.

Full tank shots.
