Unfortunaely I do agree and feel you will be much happier with the reef using thiis method., I will throw in a plug for some skimmers, For an in sump skimmer the ASM G series is great, I have also heard great things about the AquaC Remora for a HOB skimmer but mine is on the way so I don't have any experience on it yet. The live rock is arguably the most important part of the system and if you go with a reef it will be much better than a trickle filter with bio-balls. If you want a FO or FOWLR then it shoud be fine for you.
