I had a feather duster that lost Its crown about 2 monthes back, after about 2 weeks It started to grow a new crown. So In this process my duster did not come out In the mean time. I just got a duster just yesterday and when I brought It home and got In the tank It must of not liked the location It was In and totally backed out of Its caseing and crawled to a spot behind the tank that I cant even get to It. From my understang feathers should be buried In the sand where just the tip/crown Is able to come out or placed between rocks where It has some safty to It from crabs and what not.
