Totally agree about the ballasts in an inclosed area. Our our outside the stand on the back so we just drilled a hole for the cords. The ballasts are also raised off of the floor to let the air cool them. I think I have some pics somewhere. I can look.
Other than a mag float my best friend for keeping hands out of the tank is a long claw thing that we got at the lfs once. It's great for pulling things out of the tank without your hands going in.
