Tips? Let see...
Well, the #1 tip I can give is having lots of patience. I have very little

BUT, my gf Diana has a good amount, especially when it comes to arranging LR. Oh, and a good eye helps to. Similar to aquascaping planted tanks, the rule of thirds places somewhat of a role when arranging LR. So having some area that draws the eye, preferably NOT in the center of the tank.
The shape of the structure is an important factor. Just having a wall of rock can work but in terms of providing overhangs and caverns and passageways for the fish and inverts to hang out in and go through, a solid wall does very little.
When we scape out LR, we tend to decide on an overall shape we are striving for. In other words, do we want a horseshoe shape to the entire structure or do we want more of a straight structure. Then we decide on how many 'piles' to make. Is it just one continous pile or several not connected to oneanother. Also, an important decision IMO is how many passageways to create and where to place them.
The shape of the rock ultimately dictates what you can do with it, but having a basic plan of attack helps....oh, and patience.
