new project, filtration advice please.

Hi guys

looking at putting together a new system, 8" deep but only 1" square.
weird yep but should look impressive if done right.
I am looking at a low stocked , small fish setup with turfa rock almost top to bottom.
What im looking at advice for is the filtration setup. It needs to be external obviously, 1"square does'nt leave alot of room. Will be setup in an ajoining room at floor level and built by myself. Have owned my own enginnering shop so i have experiance.
Obviously low cost or i would'nt be in the DIY section, although making it myself is part of the fun.
Thought pump wise, one of those stainless steel centrel heating pumps might do the job?
Anyway don't want to witter on to much, that should be enougth to get things started.
If anyone has any ideas or needs more info before they can make a comment please just ask.

BTW first post, nice to meet you all.
