check out tetra for under substrate heating. it provides warmer water for the roots and diffuses up. many many yrs ago was seriously into live plant freshies. doing soil/peat substrates topped with sand. i had a 125 amazon basin with swords flowering above water level and breedng Uaru's, Discus, and corydoras barbadus.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~
