Hi, question for you guys. Is the color sprayed on or is it the result of coraline growing during the 8-12 in your SW environment?

The original thread is very old. I'd recommend you contact the vendor directly.

I did find this on their web site -

"APurpleReef is the ultimate living foundation for your prized coral reef tank, or fish only system. High surface area with low density results a lighter more porous rock than our competitors. Our Live Rock has the most realistic colors and textures available. Giving your tank that aged purple coralline reef look Instantly. Multiple Shades and layers of purples and pinks replicate the look, feel, and performance of coralline encrusted coral reef. Variety of rock sizes, shapes, and colors are available"

Since they say it "aged purple coralline reef look Instantly" and "replicate the look, feel, and performance of coralline encrusted coral reef", it sounds to me like these colors are added on. Also consider that coraline algae often dies ones it's exposed to air any length of time, even if the rock itself stays moist. Lastly, if the rock was actually encrusted in coraline algae, I suspect they would be bragging about it.

I will also add that in time you will discover that coraline algae is just one more nuisance algae to deal with. It can be a real mess removing it fron the inside glass and equipment.

    Cheers to that Dave !
I never understood the fascination with Coralline, Pretty purple color aesthetic I suppose.
It's just such a PITA to get off the glass, I'm so happy my new urchins are taking care of it again.
If it only grew on rocks I would be fine with it, until then I'd be satisfied with getting manufactured color from whatever they coat these rocks with.
