refugium lighting options

I need some suggestions on how I should illuminate my refugium. It's currently beneath the DT. I have two big reptile lights that worked fine, but I think the plants were exposed to the light for too long. How long, and when, should the lights go on?

I use a power compact bulb fixture over mine. It grows zoas, kenya tree and all my algae just fine. I run it opposite time of when my display lights are on, which I believe most others do as well.
